EPA Superfund Program: LABORATORY FOR ENERGY-RELATED HEALTH RESEARCH/OLD CAMPUS LANDFILL (USDOE), DAVIS, CA

Superfund Site Profile

The 15-acre Laboratory for Energy Related Health Research/Old Campus Landfill (USDOE) site (LEHR) consists of two areas – the Department of Energy (DOE) area and the University of California-Davis (UCD) area. From the 1950s to the mid-1980s, studies on the long-term health effects of low-level radiation on laboratory animals took place on site. Facility operations contaminated soil and groundwater with hazardous chemicals. Three inactive landfill areas remain on site. Following initial actions to protect human health and the environment, site investigations, groundwater treatment and long-term cleanup planning are ongoing.
