NOAA's Global Systems Division (GSD) of the Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) is a federal science and research laboratory under NOAA’s Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research. ESRL/GSD has strategic research partnerships with the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA), the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES), and contractors. ESRL/GSD is located in Boulder, Colorado in the David Skaggs Research Center (DSRC).

What we do

GSD provides the National Weather Service (NWS) and the nation with environmental observing, prediction, computer, visualization, and information systems. These systems deliver data, forecasts, and predictions of weather, including severe weather events, within the next few minutes to weeks away.

Our Vision

Making Forecasts Better

Our Mission

The Global Systems Division (GSD) of the Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) is a leader in the applied research, directed development, and technology transfer of environmental data, models, products, and services that enhance environmental understanding with the outcome of supporting commerce, protecting life and property, and promoting a scientifically literate public.

Mission Alignment

GSD's mission is aligned with NOAA's objectives to build a holistic understanding of the Earth system and develop an integrated environmental modeling system. GSD’s work to develop innovative advanced forecast tools supports NOAA's goal to improve preparedness, response, and recovery from weather and water events to build a Weather Ready Nation
