Dr. Daniel Patt is a program manager in DARPA’s Tactical Technology Office (TTO). His technical specialty areas include advanced automation, system autonomy, human-machine teaming, human augmentation, machine perception, actuation and robotics, guidance and adaptive control, knowledge engineering, machine learning, systems engineering, system dynamics, platform design and aircraft technology.
Patt manages a broad portfolio of programs for the agency, including Persistent Close Air Support (PCAS), the Tern unmanned aircraft demonstrator program, the Aircrew Labor In-cockpit Automation System (ALIAS) program and the Gremlins program.
A common theme among Patt’s program efforts is seeking transformational change in operational capabilities by enabling new system architectures with technology. As a program manager, Patt oversees the lifecycle of DARPA programs from concept initiation, business case development, feasibility determination, identification of performers, program monitoring and management and sourcing of follow-on investment. Each program centers around a robust potential payoff that could be enabled via development and application of technology. Patt places special focus on enabling technology transition, and has successfully enabled multiple operational, financial, technology, and commercial transitions.
Prior to joining DARPA, Patt held a senior leadership position at a small research and development firm specializing in autonomy and the rapid prototyping of complete air vehicle systems. Patt has previously worked at the Boeing Company developing advanced unmanned systems, and in the automotive industry, and has experience in legal and regulatory work. He holds bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees in engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
