Extremes

This web site is being established in an effort to improve the scientific understanding of observed changes in extreme climate conditions. Twelve indices to climate change study are provided. The indices are based on daily temperature values or daily precipitation amount.

The U.S. Climate Extremes Index (CEI) was developed to quantify observed changes in climate within the contiguous United States. Time series graphs and data files of the CEI (from 1910 to the present) are available for the following periods: Annual, Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, Cold Season, Warm Season and Hurricane Season. Elements included in the index include: Temperature, Precipitation and PDSI.

Established in 1997 the NCEC's main goal is to assess the scientific merit of extreme climatological/meteorological events.

The State Climate Extremes Committee (SCEC) was created in 2006 in response to the need for proper and comprehensive evaluation of meteorological observations which may have tied or exceeded existing statewide all-time record values.
