Fisheries and the Environment

Fisheries and the Environment (FATE) is a research program that advances the understanding of environmental impacts on living marine resources and utilizes this information to improve stock assessments, to improve ecosystem assessments, and to advance ecosystem-based approaches to fisheries management. FATE projects analyze the response of living marine resources to environmental changes, developing ecological and oceanographic indicators and next generation forecasting models for incorporation into stock or ecosystem assessments.  To achieve this goal, FATE runs an annual internal competitive funding opportunity to support 1-2 year research projects, making tactical investments in high priority research.  FATE also supports representatives at each NOAA Fisheries Science Center to incorporate FATE goals into the Centers’ science and hosts an annual meeting to encourage exchange between fishery biologists, oceanographers, and assessment scientists.
