The Best of Polyvore: 2016

By Amy Wicks, Yahoo Trends Editor

Drake and RiRi’s on-again, off-again relationship, 1D’s breakup, athleisure or nude lips – what were this year’s top trends in pop culture, entertainment, fashion and beauty? We dove deep to reveal our community’s top searches in our third-annual “Best of Polyvore” report.

From America to Australia, we uncovered the buzziest celebrities, hottest fashion trends, splurge-worthy designer duds and best beauty finds of 2016.

Keeping Up With…Kylie

While the Balmain-clad Kardashian klan is hot, the one to keep up with this year is Kylie Jenner, Polyvore’s Top Female Fashion Icon of 2016. On social media, Kylie gives her fans an inside peek into the life of the world’s most glamorous teen. Her Lip Kits, Kyliner and nail polish collections constantly sell out within minutes. Plus, Kylie garnered 34% more interest this year than everyone’s favorite bad girl, Rihanna, who ranks #2 on our list.

Not to be outdone by the youngest Kardashian/Jenner sister, supermodel BFFs Kendall Jenner (3) and Gigi Hadid (4) give Kylie a run for her money. The always cool Selena Gomez (5) rounds out our top five. Honorable mentions go to Ariana Grande, Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham, and style chameleon Olivia Palermo.

Drake Worked for Your Searches (Work, Work, Work, Work, Work)

Disappointing “Beliebers” worldwide, Harry Styles tops Polyvore’s Top Male Fashion Icons list for the second year, beating out Justin Bieber (2) by 56%! Drake ranked third, thanks to his on-again, off-again bae, RiRi (#2 on our Top Female Fashion Icons list) – searches for him increased 31%! The year’s most surprising addition is the late David Bowie (4). Rounding out our Top Male Fashion Icons list is fellow 1D-er Niall Horan (5).

The Boy Band Game is still strong this year, as honorable mentions go to 5SOS star Michael Clifford, ex-1D bandmate Zayn Malik and Twenty One Pilots drummer Josh Dun.

Dressing Down Is What’s Up

Step aside, stilettos! The Polyvore community went wild for athleisure for the second consecutive year – sneakers never looked so hot! Adidas Superstar is Polyvore’s hottest fashion must-have in 2016. Searches for footwear faves like Nike Air Max Thea spiked 71% and slip-on sneakers spiked 85% this year. Being comfortable is key, witness the fact that bomber jackets and mesh leggings are trending worldwide. Retro styles are also having a moment, as searches for throwback favorites like Adidas Superstar (+286%), Choker Necklaces (+150%) and Mini Backpacks (+68%) saw major spikes when compared to 2015.

Calling All Bag Ladies: Lux Is In!

Affordable fashion came out on top in 2014, but Polyvore’s Most Popular Designers are riding high-end this year. Luxury designers like Gucci (1), Chanel (2), Valentino (3), Fendi (4) and Givenchy (5) came out on top in 2016. First-ranked Gucci garnered 33% more searches than second-ranked Chanel. But what items topped the list? Handbags were the top-searched item for each designer save for Valentino and his swanky Rockstud sneakers.

Red Lips Are Out

On the beauty front, the Polyvore community paid homage to Top Female Fashion Icon, Kylie Jenner, and went wild for nude lipstick. Searches for the shade increased 553% and matte lipstick increased 267%, which further proves King Kylie’s massive influence.

Our Most Popular Beauty Brands list was a mixed makeup bag, with luxe lines like MAC (1), NARS (2) and Urban Decay (3) topping accessible brands like Bath & Body Works (4) and Clinique (5). Polyvore beauty gurus hoarded O.G. products this year, as searches for cult favorite products like Nars’ Orgasm Blush and Urban Decay’s Naked Palette had an edge over new launches.

Style Spotter - Who’s Shopping for What, Where?

One of the best parts about Polyvore’s fashion community is its ability to capture and embrace global trends, right in their backyards. On the homefront, high-neck swimwear was America’s top fashion trend, with 18 states slotting it as the most popular item. Local Polyvore searches by city put a spotlight on kicks. In fact, 14 major cities showed sneakers as the most popular fashion trend.

2016 proved that our community dared to go bare. Nude lipstick is having a major moment, with 28 U.S. states and 12 countries sporting the pale hue – further proof that Kylie Jenner’s best-selling Lip Kits are taking the world by storm.

When it comes to pop culture, fashion and beauty styles, Polyvore’s global community has a finger on the pulse of all that’s influential. What did you think of our “Best of Polyvore” report? Are you wondering where your favorite A-listers, fashion finds or beauty buys rank on our list? Share your thoughts by reaching out to @Polyvore on Twitter and using the hashtag #PolyData.

Yahoo Reveals 2016 Year in Review: Top News Stories, Pop Culture, Sports Moments, Fashion Trends, and More

By Amy Wicks, Yahoo Trends Editor

It’s no secret that 2016 has been one for the books; we saw the most contentious presidential election in American history, the loss of some of our most widely celebrated pop culture icons, and innovations in technology that changed the way we shop, eat, interact, travel and go about everyday life.

Today, we unveiled our 2016 Year in Review, a detailed look at what captured the hearts and minds of our users across the globe this year, drawing from billions of searches on Yahoo, Polyvore, Tumblr and Flickr. We’ve been doing Year in Review for 15 years, and each report gives us an incredibly introspective look at what people, issues and trends were top of mind for the one billion and counting visitors across the Yahoo platforms.

Top Searches and News Stories

On Yahoo, the 2016 Election and President-elect Donald Trump received the most searches throughout the year. What you may find more surprising is that Hillary Clinton was number 10 on the list, landing below “Full House” – or more presently, “Fuller House” – star Jodie Sweetin. How rude! FOX News anchor Megyn Kelly, who has been turning heads for her no-holds-barred interview style, came in at number seven this year.

Stories about Election Day and the death of Prince were the most popular on Yahoo News. Continuing with the election trend, Trump protests were the number eight most-read news articles, followed by Clinton emails and the presidential debates.

Top Lifestyle Searches

Millions of style-savvy shoppers flocked to Polyvore for all-things fashion-related, revealing athleisure as the reigning style trend. adidas Superstars, bomber jackets and faux fur coats were amongst the top 10 fashion must-haves. If you’re interested in styling these must-haves or want to learn about the most popular fashion and beauty moments in 2016, visit blog.polyvore.com. “The Voice” judge and former No Doubt frontwoman Gwen Stefani topped the list of the most searched celebrities on Yahoo, with Khloe Kardashian beating out sister Kim as the most popular Kardashian on Yahoo, as the number two top searched A-lister. Celeb feuds generated buzz this year as well – searches for Taylor Swift and Katy Perry were popular, as were exes Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez. On Yahoo Music, the passing of David Bowie made him the top music artist, followed by Taylor Swift at number two. Pop staples Lady Gaga and Britney Spears released their first albums in three years, earning them the sixth and seventh spots on the list. “Queen Bey” Beyonce rounded out the list at number 10, thanks to a hugely successful “Lemonade” album drop and Formation World Tour.

On the big screen , it seems superheroes helped our users get through 2016, with “X-Men: Apocalypse”, and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”, taking the number one and two spots on the list of top movies. “Suicide Squad”, and “Ghostbusters”, also made this year’s list, thanks to large marketing campaigns and star-studded casts.

Top Sports Stories

News coverage from Yahoo Sports vertical continued to draw millions of engaged readers this year. The Olympics made up a significant portion of the top searches, including the misinterpreted photo of gymnast Shawn Johnson and the attack of Judo medalist Dirk Van Tichelt while he celebrated his win. The tragic losses of boxing legend Muhammad Ali and the MLB’s Jose Fernandez also made the list of most-read articles, as did Kevin Durant’s widely criticized move to the Golden State Warriors – the ninth most-read story.

Top Companies

Amongst the top-read stories on Yahoo Finance, the unveiling of the highly anticipated iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus put Apple on the map as the top company, though the world’s most notable companies were not without their shakeups. Twitter was under fire for it’s controversial decision to close Vine, and Tesla shared scrutiny for its role in a fatal accident involving its self-driving car, “Autopilot”.

image

Top Photos on Flickr

On Flickr, we carefully selected the top 25 photos based on a number of engagement and community factors, from billions of uploads by photographers around the world with a penchant for capturing beauty in all its forms. The top photos this year span everything from animals in their habitats to nature scenes to dense urban centers. The number one photo, “Cuando amanece la pasión”, captures dawn at the Aveiro Lagoon in Portugal. The number seven shot, “Tropic Thunder II” – showing tentacle-like lightning reaching down from the clouds – was also the first time the photographer had ever photographed lightning.

We Built It & They Came - The Newsroom is Buzzing

By Simon Khalaf, SVP Publisher Product

In October we updated the Yahoo app with the launch of Newsroom, a community driven news experience that elevates the millions of conversations happening around the world. We’re pleased that the community has come together to be part of hundreds of news topics, which we call “Vibes,” and as we imagined a vibrant and diverse community has been built around the conversations impacting the world.

Some of the most popular Vibes since launch include, not surprisingly, politics, personal finance, health and technology, but we’re also seeing large groups of people coming together to discuss pets, odd news, cooking, and space exploration - proving that when you bring communities together, amazing things can happen.

image

To make it easier to find the conversations that matter to you, we’ve reimagined the “explore” feature to group topics together into categories. For example, within the Finance category you’ll find specialized Vibes for personal finance and the stock market, along with a few more that we think you’ll be interested in. We’ve also added  a curated list of “Vibes we love” from our editorial team to help showcase some of the distinctive groups emerging in the app.

image

You’ll find, as we have, that every conversation has a sentiment that can often be challenging to extract at a glance. With that in mind, we’ve also added a sentiment bar, a feature that allows you to immediately see the tone of a conversation. Each post will include green, yellow, and red emoticons to alert you which way a conversation is leaning - positive, neutral, or negative. The “likes” of your social network only give you a little bit of information to determine how a story is trending. This feature, on the other hand, uses Yahoo’s best-in-class technology that processes natural language driven by personalization, our large scale, and machine learning to deliver real-time analysis.

We’re just getting started. Communities are forming and it’s an exciting time to have your voice heard. Keep sharing. Download the Yahoo app from the App Store and Google Play Store today and feel the vibe.  These updates are live now on iOS and will be rolling out on Android soon.

Yahoo’s Election Coverage Generates 65 Million Page Views and 16.6 Million Video Views

By Megan Liberman, Editor in Chief, Yahoo News

image

As one of the most unconventional presidential campaigns in recent history turned into one of the most unpredictable elections of our time, Yahoo News successfully executed an ambitious coverage strategy.

This included a live video broadcast anchored by Yahoo Global News Anchor Katie Couric and Senior Political Columnist Matt Bai that stretched nearly  eight hours, a rotating panel of expert guests, remote interviews and field coverage from both campaign headquarters; reported pieces; written analysis; an ongoing live blog and a major social media push.

It was a major effort that produced tremendous results: on Election Day and the day after, original News stories alone drove 48.9 million page views.  The Yahoo News, Finance and Style/Beauty teams combined produced 103 written pieces that have driven 65.5 million page views to date (and counting).  The election night live stream received a staggering 16.6 million total video views (live + VOD), 6.2 million of which were live and nearly 8 million live views on Facebook.

This week capped off what was already a record breaking, agenda-driving election season at Yahoo News. Since the beginning, we’ve been committed to bringing our audience the latest news from the campaign trail, enterprise and investigative reporting, analysis and explainer pieces –  whether it was Hunter Walker’s first report of Donald Trump’s proposed Muslim ban or Michael Isikoff’s breaking coverage around the DNC email hack, our Unconventional coverage from Cleveland and Philadelphia, our multi-media feature packages such as “Portraits Behind the Polls” and “16 in 2016,” Jon Ward’s mini-doc on “Evangelical Exiles”or live debate coverage.  Every member of our political reporting team traveled during the primaries and caucuses and in the months leading up to November 8, Holly Bailey and Liz Goodwin crisscrossed the country with the Trump and Clinton campaigns respectively.

There’s still much more to come as we look at President Obama’s last days in office, President-elect Trump’s transition and plan for his first 100 days, an ongoing look at the divides in American society and the road ahead for both Democrats and Republicans.

Be sure to come back to Yahoo News for all the latest.

Yahoo News Announces LIVE Election Night Lineup

By Tony Maciulis, Head of News, Yahoo Studios

image

Starting at 6:45 p.m. ET on November 8, just as the polls begin to close, tune in to Yahoo News for live coverage of the final showdown between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. We’ll be taking users inside their election night headquarters, hearing commentary and analysis from a diverse array of expert voices, looking back at the key people, places and moments that have shaped this election, contemplating the Obama legacy, checking in on the major down-ballot races and – most importantly – delivering up-to the-minute results as we determine who will be the next president of the United States.

Yahoo Global News Anchor Katie Couric and National Political Columnist Matt Bai will lead coverage from New York until the final call comes in, with Democratic strategist Jamal Simmons, Republican strategist Katie Packer and historian Evan Thomas. Throughout the night, they’ll be joined by an impressive lineup of guests discussing some of the major issues from this election, including author J.D. Vance and West Virginia coal miner Bo Copley discussing the white working class; Ann Coulter and Jose Antonio Vargas on immigration; Black Lives Matter Worcester founder Julius Jones on law, order and the black community; former Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano; and many more.

Members of the Yahoo News and Politics team – including Daniel Klaidman, Michael Isikoff, Olivier Knox, Jon Ward, Andrew Romano and Lisa Belkin, as well as Yahoo Finance’s Andy Serwer and Rick Newman – will join the live show with updates on their latest reporting throughout the night, as well as insight and analysis on key themes, from national security to the role of women in the campaign. We’ll also be checking in regularly with News and Finance Anchor Bianna Golodryga live from the Javits Center in New York, and Correspondent Stephanie Sy at New York’s Hilton Midtown. They’ll be alongside Yahoo News reporters Liz Goodwin, Holly Bailey and Hunter Walker with the latest on the scene inside Clinton’s and Trump’s election night events, newsmaking interviews with supporters and campaign staff on the ground, and more.

Some of the additional highlights include:

  • 16 in 2016 – We’ll be looking back at the essential memories from the campaign with our 16 in 2016 series: 16 places where the battle for the White House was fought, 16 moments on which the outcome hinged and 16 ordinary people swept up by events and given a role in shaping national destiny.
  • Kids Color Map – Kids often say “the darnedest things,” and that’s why we’ve invited 16 children to color in states on our large U.S. map with either blue or red as the results are called. We’ll check in on the kids throughout the live show and hear what they have to say about the candidates and the election. At the end of the night we will create a time-lapse video to share via our social platforms.
  • Live Blog – Follow along with our ScribbleLive blog on election night. It will offer contributions from the entire Yahoo News and Politics team and expert contributors, including the latest breaking updates, important stories, tweets, trending topics, photos, videos and more.

Yahoo’s election night coverage will be available on desktop, on mobile, and via the Yahoo app on Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Xbox 360. We’ll also be simulcasting on Facebook Live.

November 8 comes on the heels of what has already been a record-breaking year for us. Tune in on election night to see what comes next.

Yahoo’s 2016 Diversity Report

By Margenett Moore-Roberts, Head of Inclusive Diversity

Read the full report here

Yahoo, with more than one billion unique users across the world each month, has a distinct opportunity to leverage the power of our platforms to advance inclusion and diversity at the company, and across the tech industry. We recognize that building an inclusive and diverse workplace is more than a theoretical goal. It’s a mission-critical business imperative that we must address with the same level of urgency and commitment that we apply to other strategic initiatives.

In the second quarter of 2016, we established the Office of Inclusive Diversity, led by Margenett Moore-Roberts, to help galvanize and align efforts around these initiatives. The team works across the organization to develop strategies to help ensure we have the right set of perspectives represented across our corporate community to effectively serve our broad and varied user base. We are focused on leveraging the power of inclusion and diversity to unlock and maximize value for our users, our advertisers, and, ultimately, our company.

Early focus for the Office of Inclusive Diversity has been on assessing and diagnosing current culture, and on fortifying the Yahoo-specific business case for inclusion and diversity. A Strategic Inclusive Diversity Council has been formed to identify and drive inclusion-related initiatives, including defining corporate values, success metrics and new business practices that optimize inclusion. Work is being done to restructure key processes to maximize pipeline flow for underrepresented groups and ensure hiring, promotion and retention programs are fully-inclusive. Employee focused programs have been established to increase understanding about inclusive diversity and how to use that knowledge to positively impact our business.

We are proud to have been recognized in 2015-2016 for our strides in paving the way for gender equality (Watermark Index Award winner), for being a best place to work for LGBTQ employees (scoring 100% on Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index for the tenth year in a row), for being a best place to work for parents (named by Elle Magazine and Fatherly.com), and by being named as an employer whose work significantly impacts communication access for people with hearing loss (receiving the National Access Award by the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA)).

Our 2016 Diversity Report

In-line with current industry practice, our 2016 Diversity report shares data for gender on a global basis, and data for race/ethnicity for the U.S. only. Beyond these metrics, Yahoo fully embraces additional dimensions of diversity, including people with disabilities, military veterans, the LGBTQ community, diverse religions, working parents and other groups that have traditionally been underrepresented in corporate environments.

As of June 2016, women make up 37% of Yahoo’s global overall workforce. Whites and Asians make up 89% of the total U.S. workforce, while Blacks, Hispanics, Multi-racials, and Others (Native Americans, Alaskan Natives, Pacific Islanders) make up the remaining 11%.

We have strong female representation in our non-Technical workforce, 56% globally, and we’re focused on the opportunity to increase the representation of women in our Technical and Leadership categories. We are also focused on increasing racial and ethnic diversity across all workforce categories in order to ensure we have a deep and authentic understanding of the diverse audiences our advertisers want to reach. We have a clear opportunity to increase representation for these groups in order to better inform, connect, and entertain these audiences.

We remain committed to sharing updates on the progress we make toward our goal of cultivating a corporate community that reflects the broad and varied perspectives of the world we aspire to serve.

Watch Out! Discover Watchlists On The Yahoo Finance App

By Michael La Guardia, Sr. Dir. Product Management

Users have long been able to create their own personalized watchlists on Yahoo Finance as a way to keep track of the companies they care about. Today, we’re taking that concept one step further by enabling users to view and follow watchlists created and curated by the industry experts at Yahoo Finance and our partners.

With this expansion, we’re bringing our audience the best of what Yahoo Finance has to offer – unrivaled access to the latest data combined with expert insight and analysis from our editorial team and beyond.

We’re launching with 30 thematic lists, curated by the Yahoo Finance team, our partners at Motif, Motley Fool and others. These watchlists are designed to help users discover trending topics and new investment opportunities while reducing the complexity of the markets – whether you’re seasoned analyst or new investor. Which companies are driving the autonomous car revolution? How are companies with female CEOs performing? What stocks are highly exposed to the Internet of Things?

image

You can access these curated watchlists by going to the new “Explore” tab on your Yahoo Finance mobile app on iOS and Android.  There you’ll find background information on who chose the stocks and how they’re weighted.  You can also compare the lists against the S&P 500 to see how they’re performing, and see breaking news around the companies in the watchlist.

image

These lists will evolve over time, with new ones added regularly.  Once you find a list you like, you can follow it with a tap to easily access it later in your lists of watchlists on the “Home” tab.  You can also share it with other like-minded investors.

image

We’ve also integrated our new Conversations feature so that users can engage with one another around relevant investment themes. Join the conversation and see what other users think.

image

This is just the latest in a series of major updates to Yahoo Finance and the Yahoo Finance app.  Most recently we introduced a Screeners feature for desktop, which offer sophisticated searching and filtering through stocks with a wide variety of criteria.

We are committed to continued innovation.  Stay tuned!
