Environmental Education

YCC Program

Mora NFH began its YCC program in 2011 with two Mora High School students. The students worked with biologists daily to accomplish fish culture tasks including; feeding, cleaning, sample counting, inventories, and collecting tissue samples from various sizes of Gila trout. They also assisted with various maintenance projects and basic office work. During their time here they worked with all staff members to obtain an overall picture of how the hatchery operates. This program helps strengthen relationships in the community and allows staff members to serve as mentors for community youth.

New Mexico Highlands University Internship

New Mexico Highlands University located in Las Vegas, NM has a program in place that allows undergraduate students an opportunity to obtain work experience in their chosen field. The University pays all costs associated with this program including the intern's salary. Mora NFH provides the opportunity for the student to gain hands on experience in the field.

Events

Archery

Beginning in November 2011 the hatchery began hosting events using the ancient skill of archery. The event is designed to efficiently teach all skills and abilities necessary for the beginning archer. Safety is a paramount concern and all participants are instructed in the range rules and whistle commands. Hatchery staff members have been certified as archery instructors by the USA Archery and the National Field Archery Associations. The class is open to all age groups and skill levels. Contact the hatchery for more information on archery events.
