Workforce Management

The Fisheries Program relies on a broad range of professionals to accomplish its mission: biologists, managers, administrators, clerks, animal caretakers, and maintenance workers. Employees must be trained, equipped and supported in order to perform their jobs safely, often under demanding environmental conditions, and to keep current with the constantly expanding science of fish and aquatic resource management and conservation. In addition, the thousands of hours donated by dedicated volunteers are critical to the Fisheries Program mission. Without the collective skill and dedication of employees and volunteers, the Fisheries Program cannot succeed.

San Marcos ARC Scuba Team Dives for Region 2

The San Marcos Aquatic Resource Center has used SCUBA dive teams since 2005 to assist with many projects benefiting threatened and endangered species in the Edwards Aquifer region of Texas. Projects to date include working to eradicate an invasive plant that encroaches on endangered Texas wild-rice habitat, surveying springs for endangered Comal Springs riffle beetle, and collecting threatened San Marcos salamanders from deep spring habitats for refugia at the ARC. The dive team had to complete an open-water diving certification program, a diving skills and physical fitness evaluation, undergo a diving medical examination, and become certified in CPR, first-aid, and oxygen administration.
