Environmental Education

Do you have an interest in learning about the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Fisheries Program, fish hatcheries, your native species and more? Do you enjoy science, learning new information, and sharing your knowledge with a variety of age groups? Then consider volunteering at a Fisheries facility. Alchesay and Williams Creek National Fish Hatcheries are currently looking for volunteers interested in developing an Environmental Education program. At Williams Creek NFH, the two large ponds next to the entrance road serve as settling basins for the hatchery effluent. They can be reached by way of the wildlife trail which begins at the picnic area near the parking lot and continues to a deck overlooking these ponds. Signs are mounted on the deck showing common species that are attracted to the lush vegetation surrounding the ponds.

Events & Outreach

Hatchery personnel strive to participate in local events and outreach activities. Some of these include a local “kids fishing derby” at Bog Tank, Woodland Wildlife Festival, several local school events/presentations, Williams Creek Youth Camp, and the (Apache) Trout in the Classroom school programs. The hatchery complex also incorporates an active summer youth (YCC) program, Workforce Investment Act (WIA) trainees, and a volunteer employment program into day to day hatchery operations.
