Democracy Then and Now (DTN) is a campus-wide initiative exploring the central role of public education in the development of American democracy. DTN considers what a good public education means in terms of civic participation, political representation, and citizenship rights for all the people in this country. Democracy Then and Now: Citizenship and Public Education is supported in part by the Office of Undergraduate Studies.
The team includes Janelle Wong, professor of American Studies and director of the Asian American Studies Program at the University of Maryland; Karthick Ramakrishnan, associate dean of public policy and professor of political science at UC Riverside; Jennifer Lee, professor of sociology at UC Irvine; and Taeku Lee, professor of political science and law at UC Berkeley.
“Funding from the National Science Foundation shows that research on Asian Americans is becoming more of a national priority,” said Professor Wong, co-principal investigator on the project. Read more about the grant and the project.

The College Park Scholars annual theme brings our community together in a shared intellectual experience centered on a complex problem that demands thoughtful, creative, hands-on solutions. This year's theme is "Power: Citizenship, Circuits, Societies", a study of power across social, political, cultural, scientific, and technological domains.
Individual Studies students Sade Ayinde recently returned from study in India, and Irene Solaiman is at the National University in Singapore. This summer Sade will be at Princeton on an international relations fellowship, and Irene is authorized for a U.S. embassy posting in Tanzania. More about these two students.
Undergraduate Studies welcomes Naval ROTC to the University of Maryland. The program's inaugural class of both Navy and Marines began this fall. It joins the Army and the Air Force ROTC programs at UMD.
