As part of its education outreach efforts, NIEHS offers educational tours/visits of the Institute in Research Triangle Park, NC. The tours offer area K thru 12 and college/university students and teachers the opportunity to learn about a wide range of fascinating topics related to environmental health, along with an inside look at some of the career options available to those who are considering employment in biomedical research.

Through the Partnerships for Environmental Public Health program, we have discussed the importance of environmental health literacy, which has strong ties to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education. However, teachers today face many demands and have limited time and tools for introducing new concepts, such as environmental health. This webinar highlighted different approaches to working with teachers to engage students on environmental health topics. Two presentations focused on hands-on tools and resources that teachers can use in the classroom, and the third presentation described the value and impact of workshops that strengthen teachers' capacity to address environmental health with their students.

Institute tours are conducted weekdays during normal business hours (8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) and are reserved on a first-come first-served basis. Tour groups are limited to 50 participants.

There is no machinery at The Imagination Factory, and they don't have smokestacks that pollute the air. Instead, they teach children and their caregivers creative ways to recycle by making art. Recycling is one way to minimize or lessen the amount of trash we have to throw away. When we recycle, we make a new product out of waste materials. This process helps save natural resources like trees as well as landfill space and the money needed to get rid of trash.
