The SWFSC partners with nearby University of California, California State University and private colleges to provide graduate students with research opportunites in shared areas of interest and expertise at the Center's La Jolla, Santa Cruz and Pacific Grove facilities. Arrangements are made on a case-by-case basis.
The Center for Stock Assessment Research (CSTAR)
is a collaboration between UC Santa Cruz and the SWFSC laboratories in Santa Cruz and Pacific Grove, with the objective of undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate training in the basic science associated with the problems of assessing the numerical abundance, spatial distribution, size distribution and reproductive status of commercially important fish species.
The Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation (CMBC)
is a collaboration among graduate programs in marine science at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography
, UC San Diego (UCSD) and the SWFSC's La Jolla laboratory and partners from several departments at UCSD; the UCSD Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies; and the San Diego Supercomputer Center. The collaboration provides interdisciplinary training linking the natural, social and informatic sciences with the goal of training the next generation of scholars capable of confronting important biological and societal issues with respect to the health of the world's oceans. UCSD graduate students can apply for funding through "Marine Biodiversity: Understanding Threats and Providing Solutions," a competitive Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT)
program sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The CMBC, in cooperation with the UCSD Division of Extended Studies and Public Programs, also offers a program leading to a Masters of Advanced Studies in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation.
CEA-CREST
is an NSF-funded undergraduate and master's program at California State University, Los Angeles which offers opportunities for focused and interdisciplinary research in environmental studies and partners with SWFSC's La Jolla laboratory.
