The story of the past eight years has been told each day in letters to President Obama. In 2009, we went behind the scenes to highlight the 10 letters a day that reach the President's desk. A look at the progress we’ve made since then through messages from the American people: go.wh.gov/LettersInReview #POTUSInReview

President Obama promised that he would make quality, affordable health care not a privilege, but a right. After nearly 100 years of talk, and decades of trying by presidents of both parties, that's exactly what he did. Today, 20 million more adults have gained health coverage. So have another 3 million children, thanks in large part to the Affordable Care Act and the improvements we made to the Children’s Health Insurance Program. The uninsured rate is below 10 percent—the lowest level since we started keeping records—and our communities are stronger and healthier thanks to advancements in public health, science, and innovation. Because of the Affordable Care Act, your annual out-of-pocket spending is capped. Seniors get discounts on their prescription drugs. Young people can stay on their parents' plan until 26. 137 million Americans now have a right to coverage of critical preventive services with no out-of-pocket costs, like flu shots, yearly check-ups for women, and birth control. It is harder for insurance companies to discriminate against you because you're a woman when you get health insurance. Doctors are finding better ways to perform heart surgeries and delivering healthier babies, and treating chronic disease, and reducing the number of people that, once they're in the hospital, end up having to return to the hospital. And because of the law, it is illegal to discriminate against people with pre-existing conditions—as many as 133 million Americans. Together, we stood up for the idea that no American should have to go without the health care they need. Let’s keep fighting for it: wh.gov/health-care #POTUSInReview

"Whether we’ve seen eye-to-eye or rarely agreed at all, my conversations with you, the American people – in living rooms and schools, at farms and on factory floors, at diners and on distant military outposts – are what have kept me honest, kept me inspired, and kept me going. Every day, I learned from you. You made me a better President, and you made me a better man." — President Obama delivers his final weekly address to the American people from the Oval Office. http://go.wh.gov/AXSZLA

“To know Joe Biden is to know love without pretense, service without self-regard, and to live life fully. As one of his long-time colleagues in the Senate, who happened to be a Republican, once said, ‘If you can’t admire Joe Biden as a person, you got a problem. He's as good a man as God ever created.’” —President Obama awarding the Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction to Vice President Biden

“Being asked to be part of this journey was a great honor. Barack and I and our families have formed a real and lasting bond over this incredible experience. During long hours in the Oval Office and Situation Room, during private lunches and quiet moments, I’ve seen Barack lead this country from economic crisis to recovery to resurgence. I’ve seen him lead the world not just by the example of our power, but by the power of our example…I hope you’ll join me in Chicago as the President speaks about all we’ve accomplished on our journey as a country over the last eight years and the work that’s still ahead.” —Vice President Biden reflecting on the last 8 years serving the American people alongside President Obama. President Obama believes that no challenge poses a greater threat to our children, our planet, and future generations than climate change—and that no other country on Earth is better equipped to lead the world towards a solution.

That’s why under President Obama’s leadership, the United States has done more to combat climate change than ever before. Skeptics said these actions would kill jobs. Instead, we drove our carbon pollution to its lowest levels in two decades during t...he longest streak of job creation in American history. In fact, since the President took office, carbon emissions have decreased 9 percent, while the U.S. economy grew more than 10 percent.

We negotiated the landmark Paris Agreement and preserved more than 550 million acres of public lands and waters, more than any other president in history. We led by example, with historic investments in growing industries like wind and solar that created a steady stream of new jobs. We set the first-ever nationwide standards to limit the amount of carbon pollution, mercury, arsenic, and other toxic pollutants that power plants can dump into the air our children breathe. We saw more victories under the Endangered Species Act than any previous administration—from black bears in Louisiana to sea turtles and manatees in Florida. We designated the vast majority of Arctic U.S. waters in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas as indefinitely off limits to offshore oil and gas. And we designated new monuments and historic sites that better reflect the story of all our people.

Over the last eight years, we’ve proved we can rise to the challenge. What a precious thing we have to pass on to the next generation. Let’s keep the progress going: wh.gov/climate #POTUSinReview
