September average temperatures ranged from 2°F to more than 6°F above normal.
The first month of fall felt summer-like at times. The entire region experienced above normal temperatures and all 35 major Northeast climate sites ranked in their top 20 warmest Septembers. Worcester, MA and Dulles Airport, VA both ranked this as their warmest September on record. Worcester, MA had the largest departure of 7.1 °F and LaGuardia Airport, NY had the warmest average temperature with 73.8 °F.
Average temperatures at the major climate sites ranged from 2.6°F above normal to 7.1°F above normal.
September precipitation ranged from less than 25% of normal to 200% of normal.
Precipitation varied throughout the region. Areas of New York, New England, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia had less than half of their normal precipitation. These areas have also seen an increase in dry or drought conditions. Heavy rainfall events brought over 150 percent of normal precipitation to isolated areas in Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, and eastern West Virginia.
