R/V Mugil is a 'mullet skiff' originally designed for the commercial gill net fishery in the shallow waters of Florida. This unusual vessel is well suited to operate in extremely shallow habitats while carrying large payloads. The 24' vessel takes advantage of the signature characteristics of the classic commercial configuration and integrates key components of small fishery research vessels. The boat was built for the NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office by Overton Marine of Tampa, Florida, and put into service in 2007. Constructed of fiberglass over marine plywood, the boat is custom-designed to effectively deploy environmental sampling equipment along complex natural and manmade shoreline habitats of Chesapeake Bay tributaries. Among its most unique features is the forward-ounted outboard engine, which reduces the likelihood of entanglement of sampling equipement and enhances shallow-water maneuverability.

The R/V Mugil is powered by a single Evinrude High Output E-tec 115 h.p. outboard engine located forward of midships. The engine is also mounted on a hydraulic jackplate to improve shallow-water performance at high speed. Other specialized design features include a large raised steering platform and console located aft of the engine, a sliding sample sorting table, and large net well in the stern.
