Employees on the Job Accidents and/or Injuries

While on the job in Boulder, on deployment, or during telework

In the event of on the job accidents and / or injuries, this division will follow these outlined procedures for all, whether Federal or CIRES employees, contractors, postdocs, or guests of GMD. Please note that all incidents shall be reported to NOAA by the supervisor within 24 hours of the incident occurrence through the NOAA Web-based Accident/Illness Reporting System. In the case an incident is considered serious in nature (see the definition on the reporting form) such shall be reported as soon as possible, but no later than 8 working hours of occurrence. In addition, as of 1 January 2015 OSHA requires that all employers, i.e. GMD, must report to OSHA:

  • All work-related fatalities within 8 hours.
  • All work-related inpatient hospitalizations, all amputations and all losses of an eye within 24 hours.

In case of emergency, call 911 or go to the closest urgent care facility or medical emergency room.

Federal

  1. Inform your supervisor.
  2. Supervisor needs to file report through the NOAA Web-based Accident/Illness Reporting System.

CIRES (as per CU Incident Procedures )

  1. Emergency and Designated Medical Providers (DMPs)
    • If you are injured after hours, while traveling, or far from a DMP, go to the nearest closest urgent care facility or medical emergency room, then contact University Risk Management at 888-812-9601 or 303-860-5682 for further instructions.
    • For non-emergencies or for follow up care, you must be treated at a University-contracted DMP (Designated Medical Providers).
  2. Inform your CIRES and Federal supervisors, and in the event you want to File A Claim, report to University Risk Management within a 4 working day window.

    CU University Risk Management (URM) provides:

    • Workers' Compensation
      • The University of Colorado provides workers' compensation coverage, as required by State regulation, for employees who are injured during the course and scope of employment. This coverage may provide:
        • Payment for medical care
        • Lost wages
        • Reimbursement for prescriptions
        • Reimbursement for transportation costs
      • On-the-Job Injury Leave Information
    • Automobile Coverage
      • covers if you are driving the GMD registered GSA vehicles
    • General Liability
      • covers if someone claims you caused damage/loss through your work
    • Property Insurance
      • covers only damage to university property, but not your personal property
  3. Supervisor needs to file report through the NOAA Web-based Accident/Illness Reporting System.
