Research
CIMSS research investigations increase our understanding of remote sensing of the Earth and its application to weather and nowcasting, clouds and radiation, the global hydrological cycle, environmental trends, and climate. Using observations from operational and research satellites and data collected from ground-based and aircraft platforms through participation in a variety of field programs, CIMSS scientists are engaged in a broad array of research activities ranging from using real-time Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) observations to derive atmospheric stability indices in support of severe weather forecasting to designing the next generation satellite instruments. These efforts are conducted in collaboration with our partners at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the UW-Madison Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC), and the UW-Madison Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (AOS).
