Snowpack monitoring for streamflow forecasting and drought planning
WWA and its partners convened three all-day workshops focused on improving the usability of snowpack monitoring information for runoff forecasting, drought early warning and planning, and other applications.

Tree-ring reconstructions of streamflow and applications in Wasatch water management - Salt Lake City, UT
This workshop was convened by WWA and the Wasatch Dendroclimatology Research Group to support the application of multi-century tree-ring reconstructions of streamflow in water management in northern Utah.

San Juan Bark Beetles and Watersheds Workshop - Durango, CO
This workshop was convened by WWA and the Mountain Studies Institute to explore the water-related impacts of bark beetle infestations in the San Juans and the Rocky Mountain West.

Utah Bark Beetles and Watersheds Workshop: Impacts on the Hydrologic Cycle and Water Quality: What have we learned? - Salt Lake City, UT
This workshop was convened by the Western Water Assessment and the US Forest Service Intermountain Region and Rocky Mountain Research Station to explore the water-related impacts of bark beetle infestations in Utah and the Rocky Mountain West.

The Utah Streamflow Forecast and Hydrometeorological Tools Workshop: Using & Improving NWS online tools - Saint George, UT
Participants at this workshop will have the opportunity to hear about how streamflow forecasts are made, and will receive training in a computer lab setting on using the new and existing NOAA online resources. Participants will also be able to provide opinions and insight directly to the developers so the NOAA can improve the web-based tools. There will be exercises designed to glean further information from participants to help in the development and improvement of online resources.

MPB Science Symposium: Impacts on the Hydrologic Cycle and Water Quality - What Have We Learned? - Boulder, CO
This WWA-sponsored symposium presented the findings from over a dozen Mountain Pine Beetle (MPB) -water projects from researchers at CU, CSU, University of Wyoming, University of Idaho, CO School of Mines, University of Arizona, USFS, USGS, and NCAR.

Front Range Water Providers Workshop - Boulder, CO
The Western Water Assessment hosted a one-day workshop for our partners in the Front Range water provider community. Our objectives for this workshop were to present ongoing and planned WWA research projects and activities most relevant to Front Range water interests, solicit input on these projects and learn about your climate-related concerns, discuss recent climate studies involving Front Range water providers and lessons learned from them, and generate ideas for future WWA efforts.

Managing for Resiliency in the San Juan Mountains–Adaptation and Planning for Climate Change - Sliverton, CO
This three-day conference was co-sponsored by WWA, the Mountain Studies Institute, and several other organizations. The goals were (1) to assess existing and potential threats to the San Juan Mountains region posed by climate change, and (2) to develop strategies to plan for, adapt to, and reduce the effects of climate change on ecosystems and society.

The Streamflow Forecast Workshop: Using & Improving the Tools Available at the
NWS Colorado Basin River Forecast Center - Grand Junction, CO
This workshop presented the Colorado River Basin Forecast Center (CBRFC) new online tool to deliver streamflow forecast information for rivers throughout the United States. Participants heard about the latest climate science relevant to the Colorado River, and received training in a computer lab setting on using the new CBRFC online resource.

Making Connections: Pine Beetles, Water, Climate, Fire, and the Future Forest - Boulder, CO
This meeting, sponsored by the WWA and the Colorado Forest Restoration Institute, involved 40 participants from the research community (NOAA, CU, CSU, USFS, USGS) and stakeholders, including water managers, forest managers, and other decisionmakers from Colorado and Wyoming. The meeting centered on four panel discussions.

Dealing with Drought - Adapting to a Changing Climate - Workshop Series

These workshops built on themes and information from the October 2008 Governor’s Conference on Managing Drought and Climate Risk. The 80 participants engaged with WWAresearchers in instructional sessions to learn more about Colorado’s climate and climate variability, the history of past drought in Colorado, scenarios for future climate change, and implications of climate change for water and other resources. During small-group discussion sessions, participants discussed the impacts of the 2000s drought, and what information or resources would help adapt to future droughts; and what potential impacts from a changing (warming) climate most concerned them.

Climate Change and Utah's Water Supply - Salt Lake City, UT

WWA co-sponsored a Symposium on Climate Change and Utah’s Water Supply in partnership with the Salt Lake City National Weather Service Forecast Office and the Colorado Basin River Forecast Center. Topics for sessions include Climate Change, Water Supplies, and Utah; Water Supply and Seasonal Forecasts; and Climate and Water Information Needs.

Forecast Verification Workshop - Boulder, CO
In order to gage forecast quality, users must know the accuracy and skill of forecasts--whether seasonal climate forecasts or water supply forecasts. This workshop introduced participants to the basics of forecast verification statistics using water supply forecasts. Presenters included NRCS forecasters, NOAA Western Regional personnel, and NOAA CBRFC forecasters.

Climate Change Modeling for Front Range Water Providers - Denver, CO
WWA organized an educational workshop for the Front Range water providers to cover the fundamentals and differences of GCMs, emissions scenarios, downscaling techniques, and hydrology modeling.

Climate Change for Water Resource Managers Workshop (Boulder Project) - Boulder, CO
Workshop briefed participants on the NOAA-funded project to assess the climate change vulnerability of the City of Boulder's water resources.

Climate and Tourism Workshop - Boulder, CO
Tourism and recreation in the West are a large part of the economy and are strongly linked to climate.  This workshop focused on the development of a strategic research agenda to assess the economic, socio-cultural and environmental implications of climate extremes, variability and change for sustainable tourism.

Front Range Water Provider Climate Change Workshop - Golden, CO
WWA co-sponsored a workshop with Denver Water to allow interaction among Front Range water providers on how different entities are planning, or might plan, to deal with climate chang- related impacts. This workshop was attended by water managers from Aurora, Westminster, Denver Water, Thornton, CWCB, Colorado Springs Utilities, Northern Water, and others.

Climate Change and Variability in the San Juan Mountains - Durango, CO
WWA co-sponsored a conference with the Mountain Studies Institute to facilitate information-sharing and interaction between scientists and local stakeholders regarding the implications and potential impacts of climate variability and change in the San Juan Mountains region. A second goal was to begin development of a San Juan Mountain (SJM) Climate Initiative, a climate research and outreach program.

WWA co-sponsored an all day workshop hosted by the University of Wyoming and others dedicated to understanding how climate variability and change impacts Wyoming’s water resources. This workshop was in Laramie, WY.

Colorado River Basin Water Year 2005 Outlook Briefing
WWA co-sponsored a water supply briefing for Colorado River stakeholders focused on seasonal hydroclimatic outlooks for the Water Year 2005. The briefing (1) provided an assessment of current and projected climate conditions and water availability impacting the lower and upper Colorado River Basin: (2) described the various forecast tools available for seasonal climate and hydrologic predictions; and (3) established a protocol to provide regular updates of these forecast products to interested stakeholders.
