NCEI Arctic Action Team

NOAA plays a critical role in the Arctic by providing environmental intelligence through observations, data products, analysis, and synthesis of observations and model output as outlined in the 2014 NOAA Arctic Action Plan. In this plan, NOAA has three targeted priorities in the Arctic:

  • Improve weather and sea ice observations, forecasts, and warnings
  • Improve understanding of climate impacts on biological resources
  • Improve navigational services

NCEI plays a major role here. The NOAA National Center for Environmental Information (NCEI) enables use and reuse of data by providing archival and access to long-term scientific data and information to inform decision makers. Our NCEI Arctic team aims to engage and leverage Arctic efforts within and outside NESDIS to support NOAA’s mission. In particular, we want to draw on the broad expertise across NCEI and integrate Arctic efforts and requirements as efficiently as possible to enable environmental intelligence. Oceans and Sea Ice


  • Arctic Regional Climatology
    The Arctic Regional Climatology is a set of high-resolution long-term mean surface and subsurface temperature and salinity fields based on the World Ocean Database, incorporating a great deal of data not previously available.
  • Greenland-Iceland-Norwegian Seas Regional Climatology
    The GINS Regional climatology is based on the World Ocean Database and provides high-resolution, long-term mean temperature and salinity fields on annual, seasonal and monthly timescales.
  • Nordic Seas Atlas
    A collaboration between the US, AARI (Russia) and the University of Bergen (Norway), this atlas contains over 500,000 stations collected between 1900 and 2012, including many types of data such as temperature, salinity and oxygen.
  • NCEI OceanNOMADS
    OceanNOMADS provides retrospective access to long time series of output from mature ocean modeling and prediction systems, including models from NOAA's National Weather Service and the U.S. Navy.
  • Sea Ice Concentration CDR
    The Sea Ice Concentration CDR provides a consistent, daily and monthly, time series of sea ice concentrations for both the north and south Polar Regions on a 25 km x 25 km grid. These data comprise an estimate of the fraction of ocean area covered by sea ice that is produced by combining concentration estimates created using two algorithms developed at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC).

Climate and Weather


  • Northern Hemisphere Snow Cover Extent (SCE) Version1 (CDR)
    Daily Interactive multisensor snow and ice mapping system (IMS) data. Northern hemisphere, weekly product updated monthly. 1966-present. Used to study long-term climate change, initialize weather prediction models, estimating snow melt runoff and analyzing surface albedo.
  • US Climate Divisions
    Division, state, regional, national and population-weighted monitoring of drought, temperature precipitation, and heating/cooling degree day values.
  • US Climate Normals Products 1981 - 2010
    Hourly, daily, monthly, seasonal and annual US climate normals. Includes Alaskan stations.
  • AVHRR Polar Pathfinder APP/APP-X CDR
    APP is a fundamental CDR comprised of calibrated and navigated AVHRR channel data (reflectances and brightness temperatures), viewing and illumination geometry (sensor scan angle, solar zenith angle, and sun-sensor relative azimuth angle), Universal Coordinated Time (UTC) of the data acquisition, and a surface type mask. The data are twice daily composites of up to 23 orbits on a 5 km Equal-Area Scalable Earth (EASE)-Grid twice daily over both poles, the Arctic and Antarctic, from 1982 to the present.
  • NWS NCEP NOMADS Real-time model access services
    For Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) model data access in near real-time up to 7-days
  • US National Ice Center Gridded Snow and Ice Maps
    The National Ice Center (NIC), a tri-agency operational center, operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the United States Navy, and the United States Coast Guard, prepares a daily Northern Hemisphere Snow and Ice chart. This chart, prepared on a polar stereographic projection is centered on the North Pole with a 60 degree latitude of true scale, provides information on the areal coverage of the snow and ice.
  • US Hourly Precipitation Data
    5500 stations in US/PR/USVI/Pacific Islands/AK
  • US 15-minute precipitation data
    Time-sequenced quarter-hour precipitation amounts for a network of over 3600 reporting stations located primarily in the US. Contributors include National Weather Service, volunteer observers and the FAA. Includes Alaskan sites.
  • Local Climatological data
    A monthly summary from major airport weather stations that includes a daily account of temperature, extremes, degree days, preciptiation and wind. Also included are the hourly precipitation and abbreviated 3-hourly weather observations. Also available in ASCII and pdf format / all stations. Includes Alaskan stations.
  • Climatological Data Publication
    Monthly publication containing station daily maximum and minimum temperature, precipitation. Some stations provide snow fall, snow depth, evaporation data and soil temperature. Includes monthly summaries of Heating and Cooling degree days. Includes Alaska.
  • United States Climate Reference Network (USCRN) Surface (land-based) Climate Data
    Interpreted values and derived geophysical parameters with other quality indicators processed from raw data.  The network is comprised of 114 stations in the conterminous US, 18 stations in Alaska (with an eventual configuration of 29 stations by 2022, as well as 2 stations in Hawaii.
  • NESDIS NCEI NOMADS Historical Model Data Archive
    NOMADS is a network of data servers using established and emerging technologies to access and integrate model and other data stored in geographically distributed repositories in heterogeneous formats.
  • NCEI Paleoclimatology data (ice cores)
    Ice core data for Alaska, Greenland, Canada, Russia, Norway.

Geophysics and Bathymetry


  • Bathymetric Attributed Grids (BAG) Bathymetry and Hillshades
    A gridded product of the National Oceanographic Service Hydrographic Surveys in near-shore U.S. waters. High resolution (often down to 0.5-1m).
  • Multibeam Bathymetry Surveys
    NCEI is the US national archive for multibeam bathymetric data. Stewarded data are primarily the raw (as collected) sonar data files, but may contain processed and gridded products. Custom gridding application available.
  • Water Column Sonar Data
    Water column sonar data collected using singlebeam and multibeam sonar systems on vessels of the NOAA, academic and international fleets. Data are available over a broad geographic area including arctic waters.
  • Marine Geology Inventory
    Marine geologic data types include descriptions, images, and all kinds of analyses of marine sediment and hard rock samples and the seabed.
  • Index to Marine & Lacustrine Geological Samples
    The Index describes the sample collections of twenty institutions and agencies, worldwide. The database, maintained by NGDC since 1977, evolves continuously under the guidance of the curators' consortium.
  • Earth Magnetic Anomaly Grid
    A global 2-arc-minute resolution grid of the anomaly of the magnetic intensity at an altitude of 4 km above mean sea level. It was compiled from satellite, marine, aeromagnetic and ground magnetic surveys.
  • Undersea Feature Names
    This is a map service displaying undersea features from the IHO-IOC GEBCO Gazetteer of Undersea Feature Names.
  • Historical Magnetic Declination
    This map displays historical isogonic lines calculated for the years 1590-2015.
  • Marine Geophysical Trackline Data
    Bathymetry, magnetics, gravity, seismic reflection and seismic navigation data collected during marine cruises from 1953 to the present.
  • ETOPO
    ETOPO1 is a 1 arc-minute global relief model of Earth's surface that integrates land topography and ocean bathymetry.
