December 2016 Drought and Impact Summary: Conditions improve in Southeast, West, and Northeast

Drought conditions improved in many locations across the United States. The number of people affected by drought dropped from 148.6 at the end of November to 119.3 million at the end of December.

The National Drought Mitigation Center facilitated a drought tournament for the North Platte Natural Resources District on Nov. 18 to jump-start discussion of drought planning in and around Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Thanks to collaborator Tarik Abdel-Monem of the University of Nebraska Public Policy Center for this video, highlighting the effort.

Dry Horizons: US Drought Monitor in ArcGIS Pro

Dry Horizons
The December edition of Dry Horizons has been released. In this issue, we feature the work of map artist John Nelson, who took US Drought Monitor data and turned it into an intensity and frequency map showing a cumulative view of drought conditions over time. We also featured Regional Drought Early Warning Systems resources and access to state drought plans; both are great for those looking to create or update plans for their state and region.
