An important day in #nuclear history! On December 20, 1951, at the Experimental Breeder Reactor EBR-I in Arco, Idaho, USA, for the first time electricity - illuminating four light bulbs - was produced by nuclear energy. EBR-I was not designed to produce electricity but to validate the breeder reactor concept. @ebr1_inl @energy @argonne

There wasn’t a lot of exposure to STEM when I pursued a technical degree in radiological controls. When one of my six kids tell me they do not like a STEM subject, I tell them that science is the basis for everything - from cutting hair to farming. I encourage them to work with their teachers to find a practical application for every topic they cover in school - this is a great way to learn. I originally wanted to be a veterinarian, but eventually found my way to #nuclear engineering. In 1982, I started as a new Criticality Safety Engineer at Idaho National Laboratory, and have been in Criticality Safety ever since - over 34 years. This aluminum ball represents the amount of enriched uranium metal required to achieve a nuclear chain reaction. It is my job to ensure that the uranium and plutonium at INL are handled and stored safely. The most rewarding part of my job is seeing the people I work with.
