IMAGES: Magnetometer (MAG)

The GOES-R Series MAG instrument will measure the magnetic field in the outer portion of the magnetosphere. The magnetosphere is the region around the Earth that is controlled by the Earth's magnetic field and protects the planet from constant solar wind. Solar wind is a stream of charged particles released from the upper atmosphere of the sun that interact with Earth’s magnetic field. MAG will measure the charged particles found in the outer area of the magnetosphere that are a dangerous radiation hazard to spacecraft and human spaceflight. In addition, the measurements taken by MAG will aid companies in providing alerts and warnings to their power and satellite customers due to the damage a change in magnetic flux can have on electric power grids and radio communications.
