Ecosystem Science

Mission

The mission of the Ecosystem Science Division is to connect biological research across CIRES in order to improve understanding of critical ecological problems, and provide insight into addressing these challenges.

Research within the Ecosystem Science Division explores topics including land use changes, biogeochemistry, the carbon budget, and biosphere-atmosphere exchange. Other areas of study include nutrient and pollutant studies in lakes and streams, improvements in catalyst technology, and biogenic emissions of important trace gases to the atmosphere. Long term field studies are being conducted within the Division as part of the Niwot Ridge Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) site, the sole alpine tundra location, while laboratory studies continue on microbial mutation pathways that may lead to new techniques for bioremediation of the environment.
