Environmental Conventions

Many monitoring and research activities covered and coordinated by the GAW programme contribute to international conventions for the protection of the environment. These result from responsibilities given to the World Meteorological Organization as a specialised agency of the United Nations. This concerns primarily the following conventions:

United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)

The Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and its Montreal Protocol on Substances that deplete the Ozone Layer and Amendments to the Montreal Protocol:

London Amendment -1990
Copenhagen Amendment -1992
Montreal Amendment -1997
Beijing Amendment -1999

European Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution

Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean

Some other conventions relevant to environment are:

United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCDD)

Convention on Biological Diversity (CDB)

The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants
