Thank you for visiting the Global Peacebuilding Center Web site www.buildingpeace.org (the "Site"). This privacy policy applies to the Site. By using the Site, you agree to the terms of this privacy policy. This privacy policy describes the information that the United States Institute of Peace ("we," "our" or "us") collects on the Site and how we use it, the choices you can make about your information and how we protect your information.

Information we collect, how we use this information, children's privacy and user-generated content

We collect your name, e-mail address, date of birth and user name and password, which you voluntarily provide us with to register (i) for access to interactive areas of the Site where you can submit comments or other content or (ii) to obtain a virtual passport and stamps on it from completing certain activities on the Site. Please select a user name that is not your real name.

We ask for your date of birth during the registration process to verify that you are age 13 or older. If you are under age 13, please do not attempt to register or provide any personal information about yourself to us. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under age 13, we will delete that information immediately. If you believe that we might have any information from a child under age 13, please immediately contact us at webmaster@buildingpeace.org. However, we may collect online contact information from a child under age 13 for the sole purpose of responding directly on a one-time basis to a specific request from the child under age 13. We will not use this information to recontact the child under age 13 and will delete this information from our records as soon as practical.

The Site contains interactive areas that you can register to use and then may submit comments or other content that may be posted on the Site or otherwise published. If you do this, please be aware that when you voluntarily disclose personal information such as name and e-mail address in content submitted for posting or publication, the information can be read and used by others. This may result in unsolicited messages from other posters or parties. We make no representations and undertake no obligations as to the security or use of information that you voluntarily include when submitting content.

We also automatically collect certain technical information about your visit to the Site, including: (i) the Internet domain from which you access the Site (for example, "xcompany.com", "yschool.edu" or "zorganization.org", etc.), (ii) the Internet Protocol address (a unique number for each computer connected to the Internet) from which you access the Site, (iii) the type of Web browser (for example, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome, etc.) used to access the Site, (iv) the operating system (for example, Windows and Unix, etc.) used to access the Site, (v) the date and time you access the Site, (vi) the URLs of the Web pages you visit, and (vii) the URL of the forwarding Web site if you visited the Site from another Web site or search engine. With this information, we learn about the number of visitors to different sections of the Site, find out what information is the most viewed and the types of technology the visitors use. We use this information to help make the Site more useful for visitors.

Information we may receive from third-party social-networking services

If you choose to access or make use of third-party social-networking services such as Facebook, we may receive information about you that you have made available to those services, including information about your contacts on those services. Your decision to use a social-networking service is voluntary. However, you should make sure you are comfortable with the information your third-party social-networking services may make available to the Site by visiting those services' privacy policies and by modifying your privacy settings directly on those services. Any information we receive through third-party social-networking services may be used as described in this privacy policy.

Disclosure of information

We share the information that you provide on the Site with third parties as follows: (i) with third parties that we hire to perform services for us, (ii) to comply with legal requirements, (iii) in connection with a sale, merger, reorganization, acquisition, liquidation, dissolution or similar event or (iv) with third-party social networking services such as Facebook that are linked to the Site where your information may be shared by us or by other users.

Your choices and access to your information

We want to keep your information accurate. You can correct or update the information you have provided us with at any time through the Site. The Site may allow you to choose to receive or stop receiving communications from us. You may opt out of e-mail programs at any time by following the opt out instructions provided in the e-mail you receive. We do not endorse and are not responsible for the information practices or privacy policies of other Web sites that may be linked to or from the Site. If you decide to access another Web site that may be linked to or from the Site, you should consult that Web site's privacy policy.

Cookies

A cookie is a small file that a Web site transfers to your computer to allow it to remember specific information about your session while you are connected.
