Welcome From The System Program Director

On behalf of the GOES-R Series Program team, NOAA and NASA employees and their supporting contractors, I welcome you to our website. This program is a joint venture between NOAA and NASA--building on a long history of successful collaboration in developing and operating the Nation's operational weather satellites.

I'm excited to be a part of this acquisition effort which will not only continue the vital legacy of geosynchronous environmental monitoring, but also introduce important new capabilities. The GOES-R series will have an imager that has greater temporal resolution and spectral coverage, the first geo-orbiting lightning mapper, and increased capability to detect space weather and solar events.

This website is intended for you, the user of GOES-R data and services. That means just about every one in the Western Hemisphere! We will all be the beneficiaries of more accurate and timely warnings of severe weather.

Greg Mandt: System Program Director (SPD)

Gregory A. Mandt is the System Program Director for NOAA’s next generation of geostationary satellites—the GOES-R Series. In this role, Mr. Mandt has overall responsibility for the development of the GOES-R space and ground systems, including launch and on-orbit checkout.

Previously, Mr. Mandt served as Director of the National Weather Service (NWS) Office of cience and Technology from 2005 to 2007 and Director of the NWS Office of Climate, Water, and Weather Services from 2000 to 2005. He also served as the Program Manager and lead engineer for the NESDIS Polar-Orbiting Environmental Satellite (POES) Program from 1992 to 1996.

Mr. Mandt holds an M.S. Degrees in Systems Engineering and Electrical Engineering from the U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology and a B.S. Degree in Engineering Mechanics from the U.S. Air Force Academy.
