Electron Flux plot

The L-shell plot displays the 2 MeV differential electron flux in the various L-shells measured by the Van Allen Probes.  L is McIlwain's (1961) shell parameter, which at the magnetic equator corresponds to the radial distance from Earth's center expressed in units of Earth radii.  This plot allows forecasters and customers to quickly assess the temporal and spatial changes in the radiation belts and is of interest to space vehicle operators.

The GOES/RBSP Electron Flux plot provides a comparison between >2 MeV integral electron flux reported by the GOES spacecraft in geosynchronous orbit and the same measurement reported by the Van Allen Probes.  Additionally, the plot on the right depicts the relative positions of the GOES and Van Allen Probe spacecraft.  This plot also allows forecasters and customers to quickly assess the temporal and spatial changes at and within geosynchronous orbit and is of interest to operators of space vehicles.

The L-Shell plot displays the 2 MeV differential electron flux over a year (top), 54 days or two solar rotations (middle), and 7 days (bottom).  Additionally, the 54 day solar wind speed is plotted above the 54 day flux plot, and the 7 day planetary K-index history appears above the 7 day flux plot.

These data are collected by the Level 2 and SpWx data from the MagEIS instrument of the ECT instrument suite aboard the Van Allen Probes.

These are new, experimental plots provided by Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory and the NASA Van Allen Probes team for the operational space weather community.  Additional, customizable plots are available at the Van Allen Probes Science Gateway.
