Drought can be a contributing factor to wildfire. Dry, hot and windy weather combined with dry vegetation and a spark -- either through human intent, accident or lightning -- can start wildfire.

Predictions for wildland fire potential over the current and coming months, updated on the first of the month by the National Interagency Fire Center.

The Keetch-Byram Drought Index assesses the risk of fire by representing the net effect of evapotranspiration and precipitation in producing cumulative moisture deficiency in deep duff and upper soil layers. The index ranges from zero, the point of no moisture deficiency, to 800, the maximum drought that is possible.

The Geospatial Multi-Agency Coordination (GeoMAC) is an internet-based mapping application to display current fire locations and perimeters in the U.S. Using a standard web browser, users can view near real-time information, updated daily, as well as databases for individual fires.
