The HEAL Food Alliance

Partners working toward a more just, healthy and sustainable food system

The broken U.S. food system affects our lives in many different ways. Children face futures clouded by the threat of diet-related illness. Food workers struggle to live healthy, dignified lives on poverty wages. Rural communities cope with the economic and environmental impacts of industrial agriculture.

In order to launch the food movement and galvanize the change needed in this country, we need $3 million to fund the first year of this initiative.

Please consider making a gift and joining the movement to fix our nation’s broken food system. UCS is coordinating the fundraising for all of our partners' work in the HEAL Food Alliance—and your gift will directly support HEAL's work.

Organizations and community leaders working to solve food system problems have become increasingly aware of their interconnectedness, their common roots in our national food policy failures, and the need to work together toward transformative solutions.

The HEAL Food Alliance was born from this awareness. Formed in 2015 with the help of Movement Strategy Center, a national organization dedicated to transformative movement building, HEAL is led by three organizations working on food justice, health and sustainability:

  • Food Chain Workers Alliance is a coalition of worker-based organizations whose members plant, harvest, process, pack, transport, prepare, serve, and sell food, organizing to improve wages and working conditions for all workers along the food chain.
  • Real Food Challenge leverages the power of youth and universities to create a healthy, fair and green food system. Their primary campaign aims to shift $1 billion of university food budgets away from industrial farming and junk food, toward local/community-based, fair, ecologically sourced, humane food sources.
  • The Union of Concerned Scientists puts rigorous science to work to build a healthy planet and a safer world. Our Food and Environment campaign is working to transform the U.S. food system to ensure healthy, affordable, sustainable food for all.

By bringing together farmers, food service laborers, scientists, policy experts, community organizers, and activists, HEAL seeks effective policy change in our nation's food system, from the corner store to Capitol Hill.

Along with UCS and Food Policy Action, HEAL is one of the co-founders of the Plate of the Union initiative, which is uniting Americans around a call for the next U.S. president to take the lead in transforming food policy.
