Office of Congresswoman Shea-Porter Announces Appointment to the House Armed Services Committee

January 11, 2017
Press Release

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Shea-Porter’s office is pleased to announce that she has been appointed to her fourth term on the House Armed Services Committee (HASC).

“I am honored to once again serve the people of New Hampshire on the House Armed Services Committee. I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to keep our country safe and support the mission of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and Pease Air National Guard Base. As a former military spouse who is proud of her husband’s service, I look forward to supporting our troops, veterans, and their families.”

On the House Armed Services Committee, Congresswoman Shea-Porter protected the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard from Base Realignment and Closure and secured millions to upgrade facilities for both Pease and the Shipyard. During her six years as a member of the committee, Congresswoman Shea-Porter succeeded in protecting servicemembers from airborne toxins by prohibiting the use of open-air burn pits for hazardous and medical waste disposal in war zones; held reckless defense contractors accountable if they endanger our troops through gross negligence; prevented the government from collecting debts against the families of soldiers killed in combat; repealed the dysfunctional and discriminatory pay scale for Defense Department employees (National Security Personnel System); and passed legislation to increase oversight to reduce or prevent waste and fraud in Afghanistan.
