The Nashville District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers welcomes you to Lake Cumberland, the second largest lake in the Cumberland River System.  The lake provides varied outdoor recreational opportunities for millions of visitors each year.  Because of the temperate climate and relatively long recreation season, visitors have many opportunities to fish, hunt, camp, picnic, boat, canoe, hike, and enjoy the outdoors.

Lake Cumberland belongs to you.  Treat our lake and surrounding area with respect by keeping it clean and attractive.  Enjoy yourself, have a safe visit, and come again.

 Volunteer Duties:

  • The volunteer must be a two (2) person team, at least 21 years of age, who are both physically and mentally capable of performing the duties specified.

  • The volunteer host must agree to serve the length of the recreation season April 13, 2017 through October 29, 2017 and agree to the hours mentioned below.

  • The volunteer shall furnish a fully operable “self-contained” recreational vehicle (RV) of the travel trailer or motor home type to serve as temporary living quarters.

  • The volunteer shall, at all times when dealing with the public, be required to maintain a fully clothed, neat, and well-groomed appearance. No tank tops or low cut shirts permitted. Shorts may be worn at knees length. The volunteer shall promote a favorable image of the Corps through personal appearance, actions, attitude and a willingness to assist park visitors in a prompt, courteous manner. Personal appearance shall be neat and clean at all times. Identification badges or tags are required to be worn and will be provided.

  • The volunteer shall maintain the area where the trailer is parked in a clean and sanitary condition at all time. No dog pens, horse corral, poultry cages or similar facilities for pets or the raising of animals will be allowed. All pets shall be confined in the contractor’s trailer or on a leash of 6 foot or less in length and must not disturb park visitors. The contractor’s site shall remain clean of animal waste at all times.

  • Firearms or any type of object that could be considered a weapon shall not be in possession or kept in the park (e.g. pepper spray, clubs. etc.). This includes, but not limited to the gatehouse or trailer occupied by the volunteer.

  • The volunteer shall not consume or be under the influence of alcoholic beverages, illicit drugs and/or medication in view of the public unless administered under a doctor’s prescription.  This includes, but is not limited to, the park entrance area, volunteer site, gatehouse, park restrooms, campsites, etc.

  • The volunteer host is required to be available a minimum of 4 hours between 6:00 am and 10:00 pm daily, 6 days a week. Availability on weekend and evening hours is required during the recreation season (1 weekend before Memorial Day through 1 weekend after Labor Day) and may be required at other peak times of the year to more adequately manage the recreation area.

Major Duties

Become familiar with applicable Corps of Engineers rules and regulations. Supply visitors with information and regulations concerning the Corps of Engineers lake projects.

  1. Live on site a minimum of 6 days per week (Thursday through Tuesday) and be available to assist the public with any questions during working hours. Staff the fee booth a minimum of 4 hours per day on Thursday through Tuesday. Check in and checkout campers on the National Recreation Reservation System (NRRS). Basic computer skills will be needed for this. The volunteer will have the option to attend a training that covers the NRRS data entry, fee collection, and general policies.

  2. Inspect day use comfort stations (restrooms) periodically between scheduled cleanups (at least once in the day) and report any needs to Corps of Engineers personnel.

  3. Report maintenance items. Examples: report a stopped up commode, lack of toiletry supplies, broken lights, water leaks, etc.

  4. Walk the entire day use area daily. Make checks of shelters, bulletin boards, etc. Provide information concerning day user fee areas and annual passes. Places informative flyers on the windshield of vehicles that do not have an annual pass or current pay stub. Maintain a working list (included vehicle description, date, and tag number) of possible violators and give the list to Ranger Tyler Matthews on a bi-weekly basis.

  5. Help maintain quiet hours (from 10:00 pm until 6:00 am).

  6. Report any compliance problems, vandalism, speeding, and other disturbances to a Park Ranger or local law enforcement officer. If an accident/incident happens during working hours (7:00 am to 5:00 pm) call the Resource Managers Office first to contact a Ranger. If an accident/incident occurs after working hours, call the local Sheriff’s Department and notify a Ranger as soon as possible the following morning.

  7. Report changes in work schedule (e.g. change of hours, trips out of town, etc.) to the volunteer coordinator or another Park Ranger if the volunteer coordinator is unavailable.

  8. Other small tasks may be asked of the volunteer(s) such as assisting with overflow parking, painting, perform water safety programs, etc.

With 20 to 25 hours of worked per week a full hookups is available. The site is located close to full shower house with washer and dryers.

The Lake Cumberland staff is seeking a volunteer(s) for Fishing Creek Recreation Area. The recreation area is open through October 31 for the 2016 recreation season. The volunteer host campsite has water, electric, and sewer hook up and offers a great view of Fishing Creek!
