Renewable Fuel Standard Program

Congress created the renewable fuel standard (RFS) program in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and expand the nation’s renewable fuels sector while reducing reliance on imported oil.

The RFS program was authorized under the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and expanded under the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007.

This website provides an overview of the RFS program, including information on program announcements, regulations, fuel pathways, compliance basics, Renewable Identification Number (RIN) data and analysis and other requests submitted to EPA by stakeholders. This website also provides basic information on E85 fuel and other alternative fuels.
