The Rangers have signed righty Dillon Gee to a minor-league deal, according to a club announcement. The deal will pay a $2 million if Gee makes the major-league roster and includes $1 million in available incentives, according to a major-league source.
Gee will compete for the Rangers’ fifth starter spot during spring training, and has opt-out clauses on both March 29 and June 1, according to a source.
Gee, 30, was recently cleared by doctors for full baseball activities after undergoing surgery to alleviate thoracic outlet syndrome in October and is expected to be fully ready for spring training. He joins fellow TOS patient Tyson Ross as recent additions to a Rangers’ rotation mix that also includes newcomer Andrew Cashner and veterans Yu Darvish, Cole Hamels, Martin Perez and A.J. Griffin.
Gee logged 125 innings over 33 appearances (14 starts) for the Royals last year, posting an 8-9 record, 4.68 ERA and 6.4 K/9 in that span. He is a veteran of seven major-league seasons with the Mets (2010-15) and Royals (2016), owning a career 4.13 ERA in 804.1 major-league innings.
