Medical Education
Our vision is to lead innovation along the continuum of medical education to meet the health needs of the public.
Each year, more than 16,000 students graduate with an M.D. degree from AAMC-member medical schools, and more than 100,000 resident physicians continue their training at teaching hospitals and associated community sites across the country. The AAMC works to ensure that the medical education and advanced preparation of these new doctors meet the highest standards to keep pace with the changing needs of patients and the nation's health care system.

Select Initiatives
Core EPA Project
The AAMC published new guidelines in May 2014 to provide expectations for both learners and teachers that include 13 activities that all medical students should be able to perform upon entering residency, regardless of their future career specialty. The guidelines are based on emerging literature documenting a performance gap at the transition point between medical school and residency training. Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) were chosen as the framework for the guide because they offer a practical approach to assessing competence in real-world settings and impact both learners and patients.
The Education in Pediatrics Across the Continuum Project
The Education in Pediatrics Across the Continuum project tests the feasibility of fixed-outcome, time-variable competency based advancement from early in medical school to exit from residency.
Optimizing Graduate Medical Education
The AAMC has been making progress in a number of areas on the Optimizing GME initiative, a comprehensive five-year roadmap to drive innovation in the delivery of graduate medical education and respond to emerging trends that are demanding rapid and simultaneous changes in medical education and health care delivery.
Admissions Initiative
The AAMC continues to introduce and offer many initiatives to broaden the medical school applicant pool, and improve the selection process to create a diverse, capable, and caring physician workforce.
