Speak Up

An airmen talking to a patient.

Be sure to speak up and mention any concerns that you might have. Don’t wait for your provider to bring up a certain topic, because he or she may not know what’s important to you. Even if the topic seems sensitive or embarrassing, it’s best to be honest and up front with your healthcare provider. They are used to talking about sensitive issues.

Thing to remember:

  • Your healthcare team absolutely respects and encourages patients and family members to speak up!
  • Your provider’s job is to make sure you are comfortable expressing your preferences, needs, and values.
  • Your job is to make sure you tell your provider about your preferences, needs and values.
  • If there is something you definitely want to discuss at your visit, make sure you bring it up at the beginning of the visit. Do NOT wait until the end, because there may not be enough time to discuss it thoroughly.
  • Don’t hesitate to ask questions and voice concerns.
  • Be clear and to the point.
  • If you don’t understand fully, ask for a simpler explanation. Your healthcare team should always be using plain language and not confuse you with medical jargon. You can also repeat back what you heard and your team can make sure you got it right.

Ask Questions

If you don't understand something, ask questions until you do. There is no such thing as a silly question. Also, be sure to take notes so that you can ask follow-up questions if you think of them later.

3 Questions to ask (learn more at the National Patient Safety Foundation Ask Me 3® site):

  • What is my main problem?
  • What do I need to do?
  • Why is it important for me to do this?
