Woodstove Changeout Program
DEQ sponsors woodstove changeout programs in various areas of Idaho when funding is available. Typically, woodstove changeout programs provide financial incentives for homeowners to replace old, air-polluting woodstoves with new EPA-certified stoves, inserts, pellet stoves, or natural gas or propane units that burn much cleaner and produce less air pollution. The wood smoke smell may make you feel warm and cozy, but smoke from woodstoves is a significant source of air pollution. It contains gases and microscopic particles that can enter your lungs and trigger serious respiratory problems. Old woodstoves produce up to five times as much harmful smoke as newer, EPA-certified models. Switching to a new, cleaner-burning woodstove makes environmental and economic sense. Pocatello and Chubbuck
To help improve air quality in the Portneuf Valley, DEQ is offering financial incentives to Pocatello and Chubbuck residents to put old woodstoves out of commission.
Participants in the program may be eligible for a $500 rebate and a 10% discount when purchasing a new woodstove or other qualified unit from one of our partners:

How to Participate
- Determine if the woodstove or fireplace insert you currently own is noncertified. If your operable woodstove is more than 15 years old, it is probably not certified. Look for an informational sticker on the upper corner on the back of the stove. No sticker means it is not EPA-certified. Learn more.
- Obtain the Woodstove Changeout Application - Proof of Residence Form at the DEQ Pocatello Regional Office (city utility bill required).
- Purchase an EPA-certified woodstove or other qualified unit from an Idaho woodstove partner. The vendor will provide a 10% discount and $500 off qualifying units (pending available funding).
- Schedule to have your new unit installed by a woodstove partner who will dispose of the old one at Pacific Recycling.
- Keep proof of purchase and the disposal receipt to claim the deduction on your Idaho tax return. Learn more.
