EMWIN

Emergency Managers Weather Information Network

As an integral part of its mission, the NWS recognizes the need to provide the emergency management community with access to a set of NWS warnings, watches, forecasts, and other products at no recurring cost. Toward that end, the Emergency Managers Weather Information Network (EMWIN) system was developed. In partnership with the National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) and other public and private organizations, EMWIN has evolved into a fully operational and supported NWS service.

TO EMERGENCY MANAGERS WEATHER INFORMATION NETWORK /EMWIN/NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE /NWS/ CUSTOMERS.

FROM GISC/RTH WASHINGTON DATA MANAGEMENT

NOTICE TO ALL USERS OF THE EMWIN BROADCAST SERVICE:

The NOAA Wallops Command and Data Acquisition Station (WCDAS) has scheduled a power outage for Wednesday, May 11, 2016, to perform critical maintenance on the power system. This power outage will disrupt the EMWIN broadcast. Efforts are underway to mitigate this outage by continuing the EMWIN broadcast from the WCDAS backup stations. The WCDAS power outage can be expected to last as long as 12 hours although there is a possibility the work will be completed in a shorter time period. If a ‘Critical Weather Day’ is declared, the event will be rescheduled for June 8, 2016.

The continuation/availability of the EMWIN broadcast by the GOES-West satellite throughout the power outage is likely.

The continuation/availability of the EMWIN broadcast by the GOES-East satellite throughout the power outage is uncertain.

End users are encouraged to use alternate EMWIN dissemination services throughout the power outage, including ByteBlaster and the EMWIN FTP service. If convenient and both satellites are accessible, users may want to consider reorienting their antennas to the other GOES satellite, should the signal antennas to the other GOES satellite, should the signal disappear on the preferred satellite.

End users who will be satisfied receiving US products - without the International and image products – may want to consider the NOAA Weather Wire Service (NWWS) Internet dissemination service. If interested, users should request accounts immediately, for both: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwws/#tab3 and EUC Software Request: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwws/#tab4

Situation updates will be posted to the EMWIN Issues Web Page: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/emwin/#tab2
