Language barriers can be a huge source of stress when you're foreign-born and moving to the United States, or PCSing overseas. As you embrace the new language, don't stress — you don't have to master it immediately. Anyone who is eligible to use the Military OneSource program can take advantage of the document translation services that provide translations of qualifying legal documents, such as:
- Leases
- Marriage licenses
- Adoption paperwork required by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services
- Birth certificates
- School transcripts for service members and their families
Upon request by an eligible user, translations will be:
- Certified
- Notarized as necessary
- Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity

Only the kinds of documents described above qualify for translation through Military OneSource document translation services. Documents that do not qualify include:
- Medical documents
- Other documents not on the approved list, such as fliers advertising installation events
If your document does not meet the requirements for translation, your Military OneSource consultant will explain how we can help you find the assistance you need. Your Military OneSource consultant may refer you to one of the following possibilities:
- For educational materials, manufacturers, educational services and community agencies may provide translations in numerous languages.
- For medical materials, we will only refer you to your primary care physician, TRICARE (or other health benefit) or nearest military treatment facility for further assistance.
Getting started
Call a Military OneSource consultant at 800-342-9647 and let them know you have a document that needs translation. Make sure you have the document with you when you call. Your consultant will assist you with the following:
- Explain how to connect with and send documents to the translation service provider
- Ask questions about your document to complete a Request for Translation Services form
- Give you the case number for your document
- Send a copy of the completed Request for Translation Services form to you
- Instruct you to attach this form when you send your documents to the service provider
- Authorize your case with the service provider with a Request for Translation Service form
Keep in mind authorized case numbers are only good for one use. Each document needs a separate case number.
Timeline
If you follow the process as instructed, here are the estimated timeframes for your translation:
- If your document is less than 5,000 words, it may take a few business days.
- If your document is more than 5,000 words or nonstandard, it will require more time.
