The Mathematical Biology and Systems Monitoring Program focuses on integrating quantitative methods into the management processes for natural resources in the Pacific Northwest. Specific projects include studies on how to most effectively monitor fish populations and habitat features that are part of large-scale spatially varying environments to quantify fish-habitat relationships for structured decision making. Our program is also charged with developing methods to evaluate progress on salmon recovery plan implementation, constructing novel statistical methods to analyze time series of populations and communities, and developing data management tools to track the progress on salmon recovery plan actions. Program staff also contribute their quantitative and technical skills to the management of Pacific salmon through the Pacific Fishery Management Council and Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission process.
