Boise Region
DEQ's Boise Region encompasses the 10 southwestern counties of Ada, Adams, Boise, Canyon, Elmore, Gem, Owyhee, Payette, Valley and Washington, covering 27% of the state's 83,570 square miles and about 41.3% of the state's 1.3 million people. It is the site of the state capital and several smaller cities. This large region includes forest lands with active timber harvesting, extensive desert rangeland, old and currently active mines, and an abundance of fertile valleys where crops, such as onions, mint, corn, and fruit are grown. The region also includes Mountain Home Air Force Base, the lower Snake River from King Hill to Hells Canyon Dam, and the recreational areas of McCall and Cascade.
This region has been one of the fastest growing in the state. With growth comes a myriad of environmental issues, including air pollution from traffic congestion, potential ground water contamination, and the need for more drinking water and wastewater facilities.
Ada County/Treasure Valley Air Quality Plans & Reports
Much of the focus on air quality in the Boise Region has centered on the Treasure Valley, which is the largest and most highly populated urban area in Idaho. DEQ is working to coordinate efforts among citizens, businesses, and government agencies to manage air pollution and improve public awareness of air quality conditions and associated health risks. Basin-Watershed Advisory Groups
Basin and Watershed Advisory Groups, BAGs and WAGs, are panels of citizens that advise DEQ on water quality objectives and provide input and guidance on development of water quality improvement plans for specific watershed within DEQ's Boise Region. Treasure Valley Vehicle Emissions Testing
Vehicle emissions testing is required by Idaho law in areas of the state where air quality is compromised and motor vehicle emissions constitute one of the top two contributing sources to the pollution. The Treasure Valley airshed is the only area of the state that currently meets the criteria specified in the law. Learn more about emissions testing in the Treasure Valley here.
Water Quality Plans & Reports
Subbasin assessments and surface water quality improvement plans have been developed for a number of water bodies in DEQ's Boise Region. In addition, numerous studies have been conducted of ground water resources in the area. Access the plans and reports here.
