NNI Budget

The 2017 Federal Budget provides more than $1.4 billion for the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI), affirming the important role that nanotechnology continues to play in the Administration’s innovation agenda.

Cumulatively totaling nearly $24 billion since the inception of the NNI in 2001, the President’s 2017 Budget supports nanoscale science, engineering, and technology R&D at 11 agencies. Another 9 agencies have nanotechnology-related mission interests or regulatory responsibilities. Throughout its two terms, the Obama Administration has maintained strong fiscal support for the NNI and has implemented new programs and activities to engage the broader nanotechnology community to support the NNI’s vision that the ability to understand and control matter at the nanoscale will lead to new innovations that will improve our quality of life and benefit society.

Federal organizations with the largest investments are:

  • National Science Foundation (NSF): fundamental research and education across all disciplines of science and engineering
  • National Institutes of Health (NIH): nanotechnology-based biomedical research at the intersection of life and physical sciences
  • Department of Energy (DOE): fundamental and applied research providing a basis for new and improved energy technologies
  • Department of Defense (DOD): science and engineering research advancing defense and dual-use capabilities
  • National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST): fundamental research and development of measurement and fabrication tools, analytical methodologies, metrology, and standards for nanotechnology
Other agencies and agency components investing in mission-related nanotechnology research are Department of Homeland Security, Food and Drug Administration, Environmental Protection Agency, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Consumer Product Safety Commission, Department of Transportation (including the Federal Highway Administration), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (including the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, the Forest Service, and the Agricultural Research Service).
