Each year, DoD’s industrial, recreational, and commercial operations generate a variety of solid waste. Executive Order (EO) 13693, “Planning for Federal Sustainability in the Next Decade” and the DoD Strategic Sustainability Performance Plan (SSPP) establish performance goals on maximizing the diversion of non-hazardous municipal waste and construction & demolition (C&D) debris. Through an integrated solid waste management (ISWM) approach, DoD is focused on diverting appropriate waste from disposal facilities to achieve the performance goals, managing waste generation, and maintaining compliance with Federal and DoD requirements. DoD’s ISWM includes a variety of strategies, including source reduction, reuse, donation, recycling, composting, and volume reduction/energy recovery.
