Research Areas

The Biosciences Area forges multidisciplinary teams to solve national challenges in energy, environment and health issues; and to advance the engineering of biological systems for sustainable manufacturing. Biosciences Area research is coordinated through three divisions and is enabled by Berkeley Lab’s world-class user facilities and complementary research programs.
In the Computing Sciences Area, the focus is on high-performance computing and networking through research in mathematical modeling, data analysis and computer system architecture and software. The Computing Sciences Area oversees the Energy Sciences Network (ESnet), the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC), and the Computational Research Division.
The Earth and Environmental Sciences Area is tackling some of the most pressing environmental and energy challenges of the 21st Century in order to enable sustainable stewardship and judicious use of the Earth’s subsurface energy resources. The Area vision is to lead the nation in solving complex environment and energy challenges that require the breadth of expertise of integrated teams offered by the Climate and Ecosystem Sciences and the Energy Geosciences Divisions.
The Energy Sciences Area seeks solutions to the global energy-related challenges that impact our planet through a deeper understanding of the interactions between energy and matter. Under the auspices of the Energy Sciences Area are four divisions, the Advanced Light Source, Chemical Sciences, Earth Sciences and Materials Sciences.
For more than 40 years, Berkeley Lab has been an internationally recognized global leader in energy-efficient technologies, developing science and policy solutions to address the world’s most critical challenges. The Energy Technologies Area features the innovative research of the Building Technology and Urban Systems, Energy Analysis and Environmental Impacts, and Energy Storage and Distributed Resources divisions.
The Physical Sciences Area embodies Berkeley Lab’s historic role in exploring the fundamental forces and particles of matter from deep within the hearts of atoms to the farthest edges of the universe. The Physical Sciences Area encompasses the Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics Division, the Engineering Division, the Nuclear Science Division and Physics Division.
