Healthy Base Initiative

Treating the effects of obesity and tobacco related illnesses costs the Department of Defense over $3 billion per year. In addition, failure to meet weight standards is a leading cause of involuntary separation from the military, and obesity in the civilian community limits the department's ability to recruit qualified personnel. To help combat this problem, the Department of Defense implemented the Healthy Base Initiative in an attempt to create an environment that encourages good nutrition, active lifestyles and tobacco-free living. This site contains valuable lessons learned, tools and resources for commanders and community leaders to consider when trying to make the healthy choice, the easy choice.

Your Health is Our Best Defense

Since 2013, the Healthy Base Initiative — part of the overarching Operation Live Well program — has brought healthy living initiatives to service members and their families at 14 pilot installations. Learn more about the program and find out which of the initiatives have worked best.
