The planning area covers 9.3 million acres in the western portion of California's Mojave Desert, including parts of San Bernadino, Los Angeles, Kern, Inyo and Riverside Counties. Our goal is to protect the desert tortoise, Mohave ground squirrel and the nearly 100 other plants and animals that depend on this ecosystem for survival. At the same time we wish to provide developers of private and public projects a streamlined process for compliance with the California and federal endangered species acts. The plan applies to public lands in the planning areas, and the travel management strategies apply on lands that are available for motorized and mechanized travel on designated routes only, totalling approximately 2.35 million acres.
