Our Vietnam Veterans

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District honors its employees, retirees and their family members who are Vietnam War veterans.  This page honors the selfless service of these heroes as the nation commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War.

Marine Sgt. Carl David Bethurum

Marine Sgt. Carl David Bethurum in VietnamMarine Sgt. Carl David Bethurum served as a forward observer and scout in Vietnam from February 1967 to September 1968.  During a 34-year career with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District, he worked as a towboat captain, chief of the Locks Management Section in the Navigation Branch, and chief of the Management Support Branch. After retiring from the Corps of Engineers in 2006, he then served six more years as a retired annuitant. To learn about Bethurum’s recollections of his war service in Vietnam, click here.

Marine Gunnery Sgt. Edward Marshall Evans

Marine Gunnery Sgt. Edward Marshall Evans in VietnamMarine Gunnery Sgt. Edward Marshall Evans served as an oral history team chief for I Corps in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968.  He led a team of two Marines using Uher portable tape recorders to document pre-battle, battle, and post-battle actions as part of lessons learned for officer training stateside.  During this tour he participated in 17 named operations from Chu Lai north to the DMZ, including the siege of Khe Sanh Combat Base.  In 1970 he served as a combat photojournalist for Leatherneck Magazine, but his tour was cut short after three months when wounded while with the1st Recon Battalion.  He later worked for 17 years as a public affairs specialist and then chief of Public Affairs for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District.  He retired from the Corps of Engineers in 2005.
