Caribbean Operations Branch
The Caribbean Branch works with the Caribbean Fishery Management Council (Caribbean Council) to manage fisheries in federal waters of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI). The Caribbean Council develops management measures through fishery management plans (FMPs) for the reef fish, queen conch, spiny lobster, and coral fisheries in federal waters. Caribbean Branch staff provides guidance to the Caribbean Council and the general public on fisheries management; assesses the environmental impacts of proposed management measures; educates the public on fishery management issues; gives technical assistance and advice in preparing FMPs; and coordinates public review and comments during the development of regulations.
