FY 2012 was the last year of funding for health assistance in Nicaragua, with the exception of HIV/AIDS support. For the last twenty years, USAID was consistently a leading donor in health programing, working closely with the government of Nicaragua, other donors, the private sector and multiple local NGOs. USAID supported the health sector by improving government capacities to plan and manage health investments, improving overall health at the household and community levels, and by transferring all methodologies, strategies and tools to medical, nursing and pharmacy schools.

USAID'S HEALTH PROGRAM IN NICARAGUA AIMS TO:

  • Expand access to family planning and reproductive health programs;
  • Improve water supply and sanitation;
  • Support comprehensive HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and care programs;
  • Reduce maternal and child mortality rates; and
  • Improve child health through access to nutrition programs.
