INL Oversight Program Emergency Preparedness Activities

Planning

The INL Oversight Program gathers data, assesses potential health and environmental effects, and provides technical assistance to state and local agencies on how to respond to radiological emergencies. Radiological emergencies can occur at the INL as well as many other locations throughout Idaho such as hospitals, scrap yards, transportation accidents, technology and industrial centers, universities, and material testing laboratories. The INL Oversight Program participates in training and exercises throughout Idaho to support responders in identifying, responding to, and minimizing impacts from emergency situations involving radioactive materials.

Response

Health physicists with the INL Oversight Program are on-call year round to help local communities and the Idaho State Police respond to emergencies involving radioactive material. Health physicists assess potential radiological impacts to human health and the environment, provide information, and recommend protective actions to state and local agencies during their response to emergencies.
