EDITOR’S NOTE: The following is a regular summary
of operations at DOE’s Idaho Site. It has been compiled
in response to a request from stakeholders for more
information on health, safety and environmental
incidents at DOE facilities in Idaho. It also includes a
brief summary of accomplishments at the laboratory. The
report is broken down by contractor:
Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Project (AMWTP),
Idaho Cleanup Project (ICP)
and
Idaho National Laboratory (INL). This summary will
be sent to everyone on INL’s regular news release

Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Project
No incidents to report.
Operational Summary
Waste Shipments: Through Dec. 12, 2009, 30,436 cubic
meters of stored transuranic waste, 85.37 cubic meters
of remote-handled transuranic waste and 12,181 cubic
meters of previously buried transuranic waste have been
shipped from Idaho to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in
New Mexico for disposal.
Idaho Cleanup Project
No items to report.
Operational Summary
Buried Waste Excavation Activities: Construction of
the Advanced Retrieval Project-IV, which will exhume
waste from Pit 5, is completed, and construction of
ARP-V, which will recover waste from Pit 9, is ongoing.
Idaho National Laboratory
December 10: An electrical subcontractor did not
follow lock-out/tag-out procedures while performing work
at an Idaho Falls laboratory facility. The work was
stopped and the subcontractor could not resume without
additional management authorization.

December 15: While replacing a fire hose at the
Advanced Test Reactor Complex, a worker punctured his
hand with a pocket knife. The worker was treated at the
Central Facilities Area dispensary and later seen by a
specialist. The event is currently under review.

Operational Summary
Advanced Test Reactor National Scientific User
Facility: The ATR NSUF has opened the Spring 2010 Call
for Proposals for Experiments. Proposals are due by
April 1, 2010, with anticipated award in early June
2010. The Call for Proposals includes irradiation, post
irradiation examination only and synchrotron radiation
proposals, a “rapid turnaround experiment,” and “new
users experiment.” |
